Space Sciences and Earth from Space
Space sciences, including specific scientific components of the Earth system, form the basis not only for space travel and satellite communication, but also for mobility applications (e.g. navigation). In addition, the Earth as a system is the focus of research into climate change from the perspectives of natural sciences, technology, ecology and socio-economics.
The master study programme in Space Sciences and Earth from Space provides students with a technical and scientific education in the field of space sciences and their applications in three complementary specialisations: "Solar System Physics", "Satellite Systems" and "Earth System from Space". The degree programme follows the principle of research-led teaching and benefits from the bundling of the location-specific competencies of the University of Graz and TU Graz, as well as further research institutions, the Institute of Space Research (Austrian Academy of Sciences) and Joanneum Research.
Three interlinked specialisation subjects allow students to specialise in space sciences and the earth system on a technical and scientific basis:
- "Solar System Physics" deepens the understanding of the physics of the solar system, the planets and their interaction with the solar wind and energetic eruptions on the sun (so-called "Space Weather"), whereby essential insights are achieved in the field of space plasma physics and the physics of the sun and planets.
- "Satellite Systems" covers the increasingly important areas of satellite communication and navigation with applications in disaster control and crisis management, as well as in telemedicine and telelearning.
- "Earth System from Space" includes the observation of the components of the earth system (solid earth, oceans, ice masses, atmosphere, etc.) using modern satellite technologies, as well as their physical description and numerical modeling.
